Rumble in hell
At first glance, Battle Monsters looks like a Mortal Kombat clone. However, dig a little deeper and you will find mechanics and atmosphere that highlight the ambition of the developer. For better or worse, this is far more than a simple re-skinning of Midway’s digitized classic.
The tone of Battle Monsters is a reflection of its roster. Packed full of homages to classic monster films and mythology, there are some really great designs on show in both the backgrounds and the characters themselves. The fights themselves take place on multi-tiered environments, encouraging lots of movement. Unfortunately, the twitchy controls and distracting camera movements make it difficult to actually enjoy the fights. This is another example of a game that is packed with ideas, but the execution doesn’t quite hold up.
This is another game that is interesting as a curiosity, despite not being that much fun to actually play.
