Handheld horror

In a world where great games get mediocre ports to the handheld format, Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare stands as the polar opposite in almost every way. A lot of effort went into the handheld version of this title, disproportionate to the quality of the game itself.

If there was a genre that shouldn’t really work on the handheld, it would probably be survival horror. With dark graphics, a gloomy atmosphere and a gameplay style that requires the player to see details in the background are all things that are very difficult to pull off on a small screen, so to see a port at all was a surprise.

Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare is still not a great game for the Game Boy Colour, but it is certainly a lot better than it should have been!

It just feels like there is more heart in this version than any of the console versions.
