John Carmack is a technical pioneer. He crafted engines that were beyond anything players had ever seen. From scrolling in Commander Keen to full 3D movement in Quake, his engines have always pushed the boundaries of the hardware he was working with. Behind the technology lies a consistent set of rules that define the way he codes.

He is leading the push into virtual reality, so it’s appropriate for us to look at some of the philosophies that drive the way he codes. His coding emphasises speed and efficiency.


Carmack’s solutions are the result of understanding the concept of the game he is developing, then making sure the core components are the priority for the engine.
