Another SEGA innovation

Memory cards are usually not a flashy accessory. That all changed with the Dreamcast. In yet another example of Sega’s innovative streak, the Dreamcast VMU is a memory card, second screen and portable game system all rolled into one.

Whilst the advertising focused on the ‘on-the-go’ gaming opportunities, the real benefits came when the VMU was plugged into the controller. It gave developers access to a second screen to show information, helping to both declutter the main display and make the entire experience smoother for the player.

There aren’t many memory cards that feature their own screen and controls!
