A pointless port
Virtua Fighter 2 is one of the greatest fighting games ever made – except for the 16-bit port. It’s not surprising, since even the wonderful Saturn version was cut down somewhat from the original Model 2 release. The poor Mega Drive never had a chance. The character models are now flat sprites. The voices sound like they are being passed through a voice modulator. The entire game functions on a 2D plane but without making enough adjustments to suit.
Looking past the obvious aesthetic changes to the 16-bit version of the game, it’s hard to even justify calling this Virtua Fighter 2. With both Lion and Shun Di missing in action, this is more like a 2D remix of the original game with some different backgrounds and music. There were much, much better 2D fighters on the Mega Drive so this port’s existence is very hard to justify.
It’s actually painful to see such a great game with such a needless port.
